Our Mission
At EOI, we understand that life with serious illness is marked by a unique psychological burden. Disease-related issues such as reduced life expectancy, survivor’s guilt, burdening others, and fear of disease progression – among many others – are common among people living with serious illness. Rates of depression and anxiety among those with serious illnesses are often triple that of the general population. In turn, such distress can impact treatment adherence, physical health, and overall quality of life. A vacuum in healthcare exists at the intersection of mental health and serious illness — traditional mental health interventions are based on textbook psychiatric diagnoses, and as such, only modestly adapt to the lived experience and trauma of serious illness. EOI exists to address this gap in healthcare.
EOI’s mission is to provide:
(1) The development of cutting-edge, disease-specific mental health interventions. These include evidence-based talk therapy interventions, mental health measurement tools, and a range of wellbeing resources such as videos for patients, leaflets for clinics, and guidelines for clinical care providers.
(2) State-of-the-art training programs for mental health professionals working with patient populations.
(3) Awareness of and advocacy for the psychological burden of life with serious illness. We can provide information and speakers for healthcare conferences, patient groups, pharmaceutical companies, and more.
(4) Contributions to scientific literature. See our publications here.
